Therapy Dog vs. Emotional Support Animal — Which Do You Need?

These two roles get mixed up constantly, and the difference matters legally. In one sentence: a therapy dog gives comfort to other people (in hospitals, schools, and nursing homes) alongside its handler, while an emotional support animal (ESA) gives comfort to its own owner at home. Neither is a service dog, and neither has public-access rights under the ADA.

🎖️ The Honest Truth About Certifications & ESA Letters

We prepare you and your dog — but a few things need to be crystal clear so no one gets misled:

  • We train and prep; we don't issue the certification. Therapy-dog status comes from passing an evaluation with a recognized national organization (Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Pet Partners, or Therapy Dogs International). We get your dog ready to pass it.
  • We don't write ESA letters. A legitimate ESA designation comes only from a licensed mental health professional who knows your situation — never from a trainer or a website.
  • Beware "online registration." Sites that sell instant therapy-dog or ESA "certificates," ID cards, and vests for a fee are legally meaningless. Real credibility comes from genuine training and a real evaluation.
  • Not every dog is suited to therapy work. It takes a naturally calm, social, tolerant temperament. At the free evaluation we'll tell you honestly whether therapy work is realistic for your dog, or whether an ESA/obedience path fits better.

Why Train With OLK9 Clarksville

Therapy and ESA work live or die on obedience that holds — and obedience is exactly what we do. Our methodology comes from Jacob Robinson's 9 years in the Marine Corps, including service as a Marine Special Operations (MARSOC) canine handler. We build the same clarity, structure, and reliability used with working K9s, then channel it into a gentle, people-focused companion. Veteran-owned and rated 4.8★ across 186+ reviews, serving Clarksville, Fort Campbell, and Middle Tennessee since 2018.

What Makes a Good Therapy Dog?

  • Temperament first: calm, friendly, and unbothered by strangers, noise, and handling
  • Any breed, any size — from Chihuahuas to Great Danes; it's about personality, not pedigree
  • At least 1 year old and reliably house-trained for most evaluating organizations
  • Enjoys — not just tolerates — meeting new people
  • Healthy, up to date on vaccines, and clean/groomed

Unsure if your dog has the temperament? The free evaluation answers that before you commit.

"Elliot was so informative about how to get our dog to be more productive and non-reactive to his surroundings. We're so excited for our future together."

Therapy Dog & ESA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a therapy dog?

A therapy dog is a well-trained, gentle dog that visits places like hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and libraries with its handler to provide comfort and affection to other people. Therapy dogs must pass a temperament and obedience evaluation, but they do not have public-access rights like service dogs — visits are always by invitation.

What's the difference between a therapy dog, an ESA, and a service dog?

A therapy dog comforts other people during supervised visits. An emotional support animal (ESA) comforts its own owner at home and is designated by a licensed mental health professional's letter. A service dog is individually task-trained for a person with a disability and has full ADA public-access rights. Only the service dog can go anywhere the public goes.

How do I get my dog certified as a therapy dog?

Your dog needs solid obedience and a calm, social temperament, then must pass an evaluation with a recognized organization such as the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Pet Partners, or Therapy Dogs International. Our 8-lesson program prepares you and your dog to pass that evaluation — we provide the training; the organization issues the certification.

How do I get an emotional support animal (ESA)?

A legitimate ESA is designated by a licensed mental health professional who provides a letter based on your needs — not by a trainer or an online registry. There's no legal training requirement for an ESA, but a calm, obedient dog makes life far easier, which is exactly what our program delivers.

Do therapy dogs or ESAs have public-access rights?

No. Only service dogs trained to perform tasks for a disability have public-access rights under the ADA. Therapy dogs visit specific facilities by invitation, and ESAs are protected mainly for housing under the Fair Housing Act — neither can automatically accompany you into stores, restaurants, or other public places.

Does my dog need to be a certain breed or age?

Any breed and any size can become a therapy dog or ESA — temperament matters far more than pedigree. Most evaluating organizations require the dog to be at least one year old, reliably house-trained, healthy, and genuinely comfortable around strangers and new environments.

How much does therapy dog training cost in Clarksville?

Off Leash K9 Training Clarksville's Therapy Dog & ESA program is an 8-lesson course for $1,000, and it includes the e-collar and leash. That covers the full obedience foundation plus preparation for a national therapy-dog evaluation. Call (931) 627-5073 for a free consultation.

Can you write my ESA letter or guarantee certification?

No — and be cautious of anyone who says they can. ESA letters come only from licensed mental health professionals, and therapy-dog certification is earned by passing an independent evaluation. We guarantee excellent training and thorough preparation; the credential itself is awarded by the proper authority, which keeps it legitimate.

Off Leash K9 Training provides dog training and evaluation preparation only. We do not issue therapy-dog certifications, and we do not provide emotional support animal (ESA) documentation — therapy-dog certification is awarded by independent national organizations after an evaluation, and valid ESA designations come solely from a licensed mental health professional. Therapy dogs and emotional support animals do not have public-access rights under the ADA; only task-trained service dogs do. Results vary by dog, and suitability for therapy work depends on the individual dog's temperament, health, and history.
